The Gig Revolution: How IT Companies are Embracing Flexibility and Talent Diversity

How the IT industry is experiencing a fundamental shift with gig workers surging 40% in 2023, and what it means for the future of work.

The Shift

The IT industry is experiencing a fundamental shift in employment practices. Research from CIEL HR Services indicates that the number of gig workers has surged by 40% in 2023 compared to the prior year, while permanent job growth remained below 5%.

The study, analyzing data from over 100 IT services providers, found that six of ten companies now actively hire gig workers - a dramatic increase from two of ten the previous year.

Key Drivers

1. Flexibility

Organizations can scale their workforce to match project demands without long-term commitments. This allows rapid response to market opportunities.

2. Specialized Expertise

Gig workers provide niche skills and diverse capabilities for targeted projects. Companies can access top talent globally without geographical constraints.

3. Blended Workforce Strategies

Combining permanent employees with gig workers optimizes resources and introduces fresh perspectives into teams.

Industry Implementation

Major companies have established dedicated platforms:

  • LTIMindtree launched GigSpace
  • Tech Mahindra uses Talex (AI-powered talent marketplace) and BeGig
  • TCS, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra enable employee external gig work

Manoj Shikarkhane, Chief HR Officer at LTIMindtree, notes these platforms "enable companies to tap into a vast talent pool" and enhance worker skills effectively.

Challenges

The gig economy isn't without its issues:

  • Job security concerns for gig workers
  • Benefits gaps - healthcare, retirement, paid leave
  • Income inconsistency and unpredictability

The Way Forward

Companies must maintain fair treatment and transparent policies for sustainable, ethical employment practices. The gig revolution is here to stay, but its success depends on building frameworks that work for both employers and workers.
